Time for a Quarantini

Let’s talk about this situation, shall we?

It is on everyone’s mind after all and of course it is.

There has been so much fear and panic surrounding the Corona Virus pandemic…so many questions, when will it end... how did it start?

Buuttt… I don’t want to focus on that, lets instead take a minute to reflect on how many people are coming together online in both humour and in so much love to support one another through this difficult time. Bravo world, bravo.

I think it’s probably safe to say that many of us agree that social distancing and self-isolation is an important step to take in order to slow down the rate of this virus.

Some countries have made this a legal requirement and others, such as the UK and USA have presented it as a strong advisory for those who are able to do so.

It is, in a funny way, something we must do by ourselves but also altogether, and it’s kind of amazing to see.

Some of us may be alone but we are not in this alone!

So lovely people of our still beautiful world, if you are thinking of starting / have to start or you’re already in your isolation process, please read on as we share some thoughtful advice from our Myself Central friends and family who have begun their journey.

“Keep a routine…"

My husband and I do not have children yet, so it is so easy for us to fall into the trap of being lazy, staying in bed and not getting dressed.

For the first few days this is what we were doing, and it was not helping our morale.

Now we have a morning routine, we get up at around 8am, have breakfast and coffee (of course).

After, we ask Alexa to throw on some lively tracks and we workout before getting showered and dressed.

It’s amazing how much more energised and positive we felt after just a few days of doing this.

I have taken on the 100 squats a day challenge and my husband’s doing push ups. Summer-bod is still in progress!”

“Don’t forget to buy some comfort food…

Before we had to isolate my wife and I did a big shop however we only focused on staple foods, rice, pasta, meat, fruit and veg… that kind of thing. We went for the healthier options which was great, however we quickly realised we were craving some of our indulgent foods. A few days later my parents offered to drop us supplies and all we wanted was a few of our favourite snacks. Since there is not much to do in isolation, we now really look forward to our chocolate bar or packet of crisps whilst watching our 7th movie of the day. We try to eat healthy too but having a few of your favourite comfort foods in the house make such a difference. Life is all about balance after all.”

“If you have kids just go with it…

If the house is a mess, if your all in pj’s it’s ok. The whole world has been thrown up in the air, no one is worried that you haven’t got dressed, no one is worried that you have dishes on the side or haven’t been able to hoover today, as long as you are all safe, fed and being sensible to others by staying in that’s all that matters.

Also, FaceTime, text, call, stay connected to people because your mental health is just as important. If you need a new environment, take a walk, away from people if you can. For those who can’t get out, move your rooms around, change your environment that way. Do the jobs around the house you’ve been putting off, that cupboard that has everything and anything in, the attic, the ironing. Just keep yourself busy and use this time to sort out your home and learn something new. Even if you want to just read a book or watch a film, just do what makes you happy and keeps you going. Just go with it, this is not going to last forever.”

“Keep up to date…

Stay informed with what’s going on in your country and even more so within your area, I have joined all local Facebook groups in my area and we all help share articles and information that explain and outline all the local guidelines such as opening times of supermarkets, information on gas and electricity top ups, recent closures and how many cases there are in the area. Keep up to date but don’t let the information panic you, being properly informed by your community allows you to prepare together and support one another.”

“Eat well and take your vitamins…

I think now more than ever this situation has forced us to think about our health and well-being. I have never seen so much information about precautions to take to prevent catching an illness. With that I would say... research (and you won’t need to look far) what you can do to boost your immune system. Before self-isolation I made sure my medicine cupboard was well stocked, I now take high doses of vitamin c daily and get in green smoothies, fruit and veg anytime I can. Retreat and strengthen, that’s how we win this war.”

“Temperance is not a bad thing…

This is the time to reflect on how much money we waste on things we don't need. It’s come down to essentials like loo roll, pasta, flour, rice and beans. Even with our supermarkets empty, we still have more than so many others in the third world.

So read, learn new things, meditate, pray, exercise and please be grateful because we still have a lot and if we manage to keep our health, we have all we need.”

Have you noticed the one thing all these have in common? They have all tried to make the best of a bad situation. We cannot control what is happening in the world today, but we can control our reaction to it.

We must take the challenges we are faced with and try to make them work for us as much as we can.

In the face of this crisis, the silver lining is that many of us get to slow down finally.

We can rest and spend time with our family, our children, our partners and most importantly with ourselves.

Why not use your newfound solitude to take the time to fall in love again with who you really are…and don’t forget we can help occupy your time too!
